Thompson Turner Construction and Betsch and Associates, LLC were hired by the College of Charleston to build the new 5,100-seat, TD Arena and renovate the existing John Kresse Arena.

A Strong Contribution to Downtown Charleston

This state-of-the-art arena is the home of College of Charleston men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. In addition to serving as one of the premier facilities in the Colonial Athletic Association, the TD Arena includes expanded media areas, a hospitality area, locker rooms for multiple teams, and a box office.

It houses dedicated Hall of Fame areas, strength and conditioning areas, an expanded practice area and office space, an academic support area, a spacious sports medicine facility, racquetball courts, squash courts, four concession stands, and rest rooms.

The arena is located on Meeting Street, in the heart of a busy business, residential, and college area that is bordered on three sides with inhabited buildings. Noise and vibration ordinances were observed as well as traffic movements. The project included the demolition of an existing sports facility that was connected to the existing John Kresse Arena that remained occupied during construction of the new arena.

Renovation consisted of the excavation and removal of materials to accommodate the erection of a two-story building within the existing John Kress Arena. The only way into the site was through a 30’ opening through an historic fence on Meeting Street.
