Thompson Turner Construction served as CM At-Risk, collaborating with architect Moseley Architects, to build the new Sullivan’s Island Elementary School—a unique 74,724 SF, two-story facility perched on more than 300 concrete piers and one of only three beachfront schools in the nation.
Designed to “learn by the sea,” the school subtly integrates into its coastal environment, elevated above floodplain levels and engineered to meet rigorous hurricane and seismic codes, including reinforced concrete slabs, wind-resistant framing, and pier foundations to withstand storm surge and sea-level considerations .
Construction occurred on a sensitive barrier island site adjacent to protected wetlands. This required careful site handling to protect environmentally sensitive habitats, meticulous stormwater controls, and sequencing activities to respect local regulations and minimize disruption to beach access. Weekly coordination meetings with homeowners' associations and local authorities ensured construction aligned with seasonal festivals and community uses.
Key site work included grading, underground utility installations, and construction of a parent drop-off loop, bus circulation, and staff parking on previously undeveloped coastal terrain. The building’s envelope features hurricane-rated storefronts, curtain walls, and windows, while exterior finishes harmonize with the island’s aesthetic. Interiors promote a connection to the coastal setting with abundant daylight through large windows and energy-efficient design elements like sun-shading louvers and translucent glass, optimizing natural light while mitigating glare and solar heat gain.
The completed Sullivan’s Island Elementary School achieves a strong balance of structural resilience, environmental stewardship, community integration, and educational excellence—providing a durable and inspiring learning environment framed by the unique coastal character of Sullivan’s Island.
