Thompson Turner Construction, in partnership with Jumper Carter Sease Architects, provided Design-Build services for Carolina Park Elementary School, a 148,524 SF facility designed to serve up to 900 students from Pre-K through 5th grade. Located on a 22-acre site within the Carolina Park development in Mount Pleasant, the school was designed and constructed with a focus on sustainability, functionality, and sensitivity to its residential surroundings.
Sustainable features are integrated throughout the building, including extensive use of natural daylighting through carefully placed windows, translucent glazing, and sun-shading devices that reduce glare and heat gain while maximizing interior light quality. Hurricane-rated storefronts, curtain walls, and windows were installed in accordance with regional performance standards. The facility also includes high-gloss epoxy terrazzo flooring with custom acorn-and-tree graphics across major public zones to provide durability, visual interest, and ease of maintenance.
Given the site’s proximity to a large residential subdivision, construction required precise logistical coordination. Thompson Turner Construction implemented a phased site strategy to manage access, minimize disruption, and ensure safety throughout the build. The project successfully balances architectural quality, environmental responsiveness, and long-term performance, supporting Charleston County School District’s commitment to high-quality educational environments.
