Francis Marion University selected the Design-Build team of Thompson Turner Construction, McMillan Pazdan Smith, and Collins & Almers to deliver the 12,000 SF Freshwater Ecology Research Center—a state-of-the-art educational and research facility serving the northeastern region of South Carolina. Located on a 146-acre campus and positioned along a 20-acre pond used for field study, the FEC is designed to address freshwater resource challenges in the Pee Dee region while preparing the next generation of natural resource professionals.

The complex includes two distinct wings: the 6,000 SF John G. Rae III Freshwater Ecology Center housing labs, offices, and classrooms, and a 6,000 SF conference center. Specialized spaces include a teaching laboratory, fisheries laboratory, and a chemistry laboratory with dedicated prep and storage areas, all outfitted with emergency safety features. In addition to the research facilities, the site also offers public fishing access and nature trails to support educational outreach and community engagement.
