Project Details

The MUSC Health Black River Medical Center is a freestanding hospital built to expand access to care in Williamsburg and lower Florence counties. Thompson Turner Construction, in partnership with Rodgers Builders, served as Construction Manager at Risk for the project, which sits on a 40-acre site along SC Highway 52. Designed by McMillan Pazdan Smith, the 64,000 SF facility includes 25 inpatient beds, 5 observation rooms, two operating rooms, a 16-bay Emergency Department, imaging services, laboratory, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, and full dietary support with a commercial kitchen and dining area. Site development included stormwater management, utility extensions, and drive access. The steel-framed structure features high-performance roofing, insulation, and waterproofing systems. Efficient HVAC, lighting, and low-flow fixtures contributed to the project’s Two Green Globes certification for sustainability.

The hospital integrates advanced telecommunications and telehealth infrastructure and was designed to streamline clinical workflows while prioritizing patient comfort. Community input informed both planning and design, resulting in a modern rural health facility that supports long-term wellness goals and serves as a model for future healthcare development in underserved areas.
