Thompson Turner Construction completed two specialized healthcare renovations for Prisma Health on its active Tuomey Hospital campus in Sumter, SC. The work involved complex upfits in occupied medical facilities, requiring careful phasing, rigorous infection control measures, and close coordination with hospital operations to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
The first project was a 9,415 SF renovation of existing shell space to create a new cardiology department. The upfit included 21 exam rooms, an echocardiogram lab, patient prep and recovery areas, and administrative support space. Designed to support modern cardiovascular diagnostics, the facility also integrates with Prisma Health’s virtual ICU system, allowing cardiology staff to collaborate in real time with specialists across the network. Phased construction and precise logistics planning allowed the department to remain operational throughout the renovation.
The second project involved conversion of two interior spaces into a new 1,000 SF outpatient digital mammography suite. The scope included infrastructure upgrades to support advanced 3D imaging equipment, as well as two private dressing rooms and an optimized layout that enhances patient comfort and clinical workflow. The mammography suite contributes to Prisma’s Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation.
Both projects highlight Thompson Turner Construction’s ability to safely and efficiently deliver healthcare renovations within active environments, ensuring patient access, operational continuity, and high-performance clinical sp
