Thompson Turner Construction and Stevens & Wilkinson were hired by Sumter County to provide design-build services for the new Sumter County Judicial Center. This judicial center is a three-story, steel-framed structure with composite slabs and a stone/brick/curtain wall veneer that is designed to separate public areas from restricted spaces and secure holding cells. The public spaces stretch from the corner lobby parallel with East Canal Street. The curtainwall of glass floods this linear space leading to the courtrooms with daylight.
On the second and third floors, two courtrooms flank a security core that stacks over the Sheriff’s holding area. Judges’ chambers and jury deliberation rooms are also on these two floors and have limited access via a system of restricted corridors. Security is the number one priority on any courthouse, and on this new facility we incorporated state-of-the-art building security, detention security, and audio/visual technologies throughout the facility. Approximately 15,000 SF of this facility is designated for the temporary housing of prisoners.
